Just under five months ago, it became very clear that my girlfriend was the one, and that she is definitely the woman that I want to marry. This meant going out and buying an engagement ring, but heck, I’m a guy, what do I know about buying jewelry? I did what any savvy consumer would, I researched. I actually ordered two books of Amazon to learn about rings and how to pick them out. The books were “Engagement & Wedding Rings, 2nd Edition: The Definitive Buying Guide for People” and “Diamond Ring Buying Guide: How to Evaluate, Identify and Select Diamonds.” I would recommend them to anyone considering buying a wedding ring. They cover things such as the Four C’s, the different types of rings and the like.

Before even considering buying a ring, you have to get yourself a basic education about engagement rings. There’s no substitute to that. You can do research online, read books, ask people who have recently become engaged. Don’t just go down to the local jewelry store and ask questions. This will get you into trouble. If you happen to walk into a dishonest jewelry store, they will give you bad information and try to get you to spend way too much money on a ring. They’ll try to tell you that you should spend “two months salary” on a ring that you can probably get for half that cost somewhere else. Don’t go into a jewelry store unless you’ve already done at least 10 hours worth of research. If you do buy from a brick and mortar jewelry store, know about what you should expect to pay for a specific diamond ring before agreeing to anything. Compare similar rings in online jewelry stores and make sure you are not paying too much!

The problem is that most of us guys just hate to read. We might be able to figure out our girlfriend’s ring size, but that’s about it. We don’t want to have to read and learn, we just want to spend money and get a good deal. I highly suggest that you read, do research, and find a reputable store, but if you don’t want to read and do research, there’s a way you can buy an engagement ring without getting had. Just find out your girlfriend’s ring size, and go on and get something that looks nice, and you won’t get beaten up. In this case, you are making a relatively uninformed decision, but you are buying from a very good and reputable company.

There are a lot of bad online diamond retailers that you should run from, but Blue Nile is pretty much the best. I ended up getting a nice three-stone ring that my fiancé loved for just under $1,000. It was exactly as described on the website, and the customer service people were very helpful. I would recommend the site to anyone.

I highly recommend you do the research and make sure you’re getting the best buy possible, but if you’re like most guys and just want to go buy something, Blue Nile is definitely the way to go.
