Silver jewelry may be sterling silver or what is known as costume jewelry or fashion jewelry. Both types are shiny and beautiful when new, but their durability will affect your choice depending on how you intend to use the piece. If you like to change your jewelry frequently and enjoy a wide variety of changing styles and look, fashion jewelry may appeal to you. The cost is usually minimal and it is widely available.

However, if you prefer a special piece that you will wear for years as a treasured favorite, look for sterling silver jewelry. Sterling silver has a cool glow that isn’t found in other metals, and it will enhance any clothing style. It is appropriate for everyday wear as well as dressy occasions. Silver fashion jewelry or costume jewelry is often brass or some other base metal coated with a silver finish. Sterling silver can be damaged, of course, by certain chemicals and scratched by sharp objects. A silver ring that is worn continuously can be exposed to all manner of damaging elements. For example, if you are working in a garden the dirt or rocks could scratch your rings. Some chemicals will discolor silver. Bleach, for example will give it a dull appearance which, luckily, can be buffed away to restore the lustrous gleam of the silver. Properly cared for, worn often and well-loved, sterling silver jewelry will delight the wearer and enhance any look.
